Victorian Architectural Hardware
The Victorian architectural style and the home hardware produced during this time (1825-1900) is not one specific type of hardware but rather an eclectic mix of various styles that were popular and classified as Victorian Era hardware after the fact. Most notably during this time home decorating became more ornate and reflected the changing social and economic revolutions that were occurring in the United States. The industrial revolution brought mass production of goods and beautiful home hardware was no longer only accessible to the “upper class” of society. The newly formed middle class in America embraced these new architectural styles and filled their home with a variety of popular trends.
Depending on the taste of the inhabitants the doorknob sets, cabinet hardware, window hardware and home hardware could vary widely. In some homes a very ornate style (sometimes referred to during this time as romantic because of the emphasis on flowers and nature motifs) was used while in others more geometric designs (such as the Eastlake design) were extremely popular. Solid brass was used for its strength and the ability to cast in a wide variety of designs and patterns. Some of the most popular styles included Gothic Revival, Italianate, Second Empire, Queen Anne and Stick Style. The trademark features of each style varied slightly with different emphasis being placed on window design, roofing, exterior decorative elements and interior home hardware patterns.
Victorian style hardware is produced today and can be used in both older Victorian homes and modern houses. It is a timeless addition to any room and can transform an entire room with little effort. Older and worn furniture can be transformed by replacing the original knobs with elegant designs and doorknob sets can be easily replaced to become a wonderful focal point. Interior and exterior Victorian style is available and makes it extremely easy to create a new and beautiful theme throughout your entire home. Remember that these styles were used interchangeably during the Victorian era so you can use a variety of patterns and shapes throughout your house and it will tie itself together nicely.
Victorian era hardware is readily available online and in many home decoration catalogs. Search for solid brass construction to ensure high quality and strength. Solid brass hardware is available in several finishes and can coordinate well with your existing hardware. These pieces are available online through LookInTheAttic & Company and they offer free design assistance and help.

Original Antique Pine Wardrobes From Europe That Dissmantle
Wardrobes are generally the key piece of furniture in any bedroom as they often dominate the room. Other furniture is often covered or concealed by ornaments, photographs and day to day products like jewelery boxes and makeup. The wardrobe is usually the most clearly visible piece of furniture so the look and style of it can influence your whole room. Fashion can change over the years but the wardrobe in your house can stand the test of time. A wardrobe will last as long as you want it to, this depends on how much you are prepared to spend. If you invest in good quality furniture you will not be disappointed and it will serve you well for years to come. Alternatively many people spend less on furniture so they can update to keep up with the latest fashions. Our customers have invariably tried the cheaper route and found that the cheaper quality products let them down due to bad construction and finishes that do not stand the test of time so they look to us for an alternative which is unique and practical.
Our particular style of antique wardrobes are original and usually between eighty and one hundred years old. Each one being unique as we rarely get two the same apart from a few pairs that have come in over the years. The wardrobes are all pine as we don’t deal in any other type of wood. All the wardrobes have been hot caustic stripped to remove years of old paint and kill any wood worm. When all all the paint or varnish has been removed we can see what sort of repairs are required, hopefully not too many, as we try to keep all the original features where possible. Normally the first job is to replace the feet with new ones in a style and shape that matches the wardrobe, a victorian bun is a good choice. The feet have a dowel so you have to drill a hole in the base to fit them, they can be glued in but if you have a good fit, leave the glue then you can remove them later. I have to change the top cornice sometimes as they get damaged over the years, plus any splits in the panels are glued and clamped. Check the drawer runners for wear and replace them if necessary. The wardrobe can be sanded down now if there are no other major repairs and stained down with a water based stain to blend in the repairs ready for waxing. Locks and keys are also repaired and replaced.
Our wardrobe collection are mainly of a breakdown type with one, two or three doors. The construction is normally fitted together by tongue and groove joints on all the larger parts and dowels on the rest, this allows the wardrobe to be completely disassembled and easily reassembled in your home. The joints are held together tightly by a wooden or metal taper on the inside on all four corners which gives a good solid construction.
We endeavour to find the best quality pieces with good lines and age but also good solid craftsmanship when they were fist made, so you get furniture that will keep its value and stand the test of time

Antique Doorknockers And Vintage Style Brass And Bronze Knockers
Antique and vintage style doorknockers are a wonderful way to show grace and detail at the front entrance of any home. Doorknockers have been popular in Europe for hundreds of years and have been found in America since the earliest colonization. Architectural and designer doorknockers were popularized in the late 1880′s and early 1900′s, and they were characterized by form rather than function. The early 1920′s treated doorknockers as more streamlined architecture and precise geometric patterns rather than functional objects.
Grand doorknockers and door bells are timeless and are a welcome addition to any home. These architectural elements exemplify simplicity, beauty and tradition. Long before more modern electric doorbells came into fashion, grand doorknockers abounded and could even help distinguish one flat from another. Of course, mechanical doorbells were also used in conjunction with door knockers and can still be found in many homes today. Door knockers are typically found in cast iron, bronze, antique brass and polished chrome with the most famous styles found in naturally aging unlaquered brass.
Many different doorknocker designs are produced today – allowing you to incorporate their patterns in your doors. It is a simple way to incorporate a striking design element at the front entryway. Doorknockers can be either front or rear mounted – with the heavier and more expensive knockers found as a rear mount. You can also find doorknockers in many different styles including Colonial, Rococo, Victorian, Art Deco, Craftsman and post modern styles. You can also ask an interior designer or other design experts for assistance or look to decorating magazines for additional help.
Hundreds of styles of door knockers are readily available online as well as in many home decorating catalogs. When you work with a doorknocker, be prepared. Search for solid brass or bronze construction and be sure to ask questions. Will the knocker fit your personal style, but also fit your door? Is it front or rear mount? What is the hole spacing and will I need to re-drill my door? Many styles of doorknocker hardware can be found online through LookInTheAttic & Company - they also offer free design assistance and help.
