Question by Gavin: Does anyone have a simple tutorial for making a Victorian-style bustle?
I was hoping to make my sister a bustle to wear under her skirts for Dickens Faire. She already has a petticoat and bustle skirt–I just need to learn how to make a separate bustle she can wear underneath [so it has to be removable--nothing built into the skirt itself]. Any simple, step-by-step tutorials on how to make your first Victorian-style bustle?

You can follow the instructions on this Youtube video on how to make a Victorian style bustle. Instead of sewing it onto the skirt itself, just velcro it onto the skirt so that it is detachable.
Here is a website with instructions on how to make a Victorian style bustle. Once again, do not sew into the skirt, velcro it if you want it to be detachable.

Can anyone help with my wood trim in my old victorian home?
Category: All Things Victorian
Question by Angel: Can anyone help with my wood trim in my old victorian home?
I have an old home built in 1904. All the trim is white. I am debating on stripping and refinishing, but someone told me that these old victorian houses had white trim originally. I know this is not true of craftsman houses (1920′s – 930′s) Does anyone have any insight on this? If it matters it’s a house in Minneapolis, MN.

Unless your home is a very fancy one and was built for people of means, your woodwork is probably pine with paint. Not everyone lived in ‘the grand fashion’. Sometimes pine was used and then painted to look like wood. You should do some research by finding an out-of-the-way area and gently scraping a small piece to expose past layers. You will also be able to see what type of wood there is after you get through the paint, and actually, Craftsman homes also had painted woodwork.

Has anyone heard of The Crescent Furniture Company around the turn of the century?
Category: All Things Victorian
I have a huge antique Victorian pedestal dining table with a center hidden leg and four Griffins (or similar animal) carved and supporting the center pedestal. The only markings on the table is a stamped “Crescent No.” on the underside of the table top. The table measures 54″ square and has five 11″ leaves. I want to sell the table, but need some information on it. Is anyone familiar with the company? Or do you know where I could get some information? Thanks for the help.
Thanks for the help on this. The link, however, is not the same company. Note the spelling of the word Crescent. So, if anyone has some info, I would be grateful.

It is advertised on a full page in newspapers. You bring in gold, silver, coins, jewelry etc. It is groups of people 3-4 who travel to cities and stay in lower priced motels for about a week. You bring in items and they tell you what they will pay for them. I was curious,so I did bring a few pieces of gold jewelry and a couple of watches. There were 2 guys and a boy. I thought their written estimate of what they would pay me was very low…less than $200. So I said no,I just wanted to see what my stuff was worth. I stood up to go. I was then offered almost $600. I said no…especially because of one item…which made me wonder about the value of the rest .– A 2 year old Movado watch only worn once…original price over $900. They offered $40 for that.
The rest was antique victorian 14kt gold and 18kt. gold jewelry and antique silver jewelry. Did I do right by saying no and leaving?

Can anyone offer advice on moving an antique dresser w/ mirror?
Category: All Things Victorian
Okay, this will probably come off as a little odd, but I really need some advice.
I have a massive marble-top dresser. It’s an antique, appx. 1840ish, and is part of a bedroom set my mother inherited from my gran. It’s huge. I’d say eight-feet-tall assembled (conservatively — it dwarfs the eleven foot ceilings where it’s housed), about five feet wide. I don’t have a picture, but it’s roughly approximate to this: http://www.aisforantiques.com/gallery/pictures/victorian%20dresser.jpg — the difference being the mirror has solid carved wood on either side of it, not simply “dips.”
This is one heavy sucker.
My mum is moving things out of her bedroom in order to put down new floorboards, and I had one of the worst experiences of my life today trying to — with my mother and my brother — balance the mirror as it was unscrewed, hoist it up off of the marble, and then move it into another room.
The rest of the dresser is a cinch to move (even the marble is quite light, in comparison), but this mirror is a bloody nightmare, and I’m dreading the day next week when we’re going to have to lift it back up onto the dresser. None of us are exactly weaklings — I’m a fencer, and my mother is a former cop; we’re both pretty fit — but I cannot seriously see how we’re going to be able to lift it the three feet onto the dresser without devising a better method than simply brut force.
And to make matters worse, the thing is relatively fragile. It’s old. It’s creaky, and simply not in the best of shape, which adds scads to the stress of moving it around. When mounted on the dresser, the sheer size makes it wobbly (even when assembled, it HAS to be placed next to a wall for support, as the only thing holding the mirror to the dresser are two ancient 2x4s and four screws).
*breathes*
So, does anyone have any — ANY — advice for when one has to move an antique of this magnitude? Obviously, Victorian dressers like this are relatively common, ergo I can’t be the only person suffering humilitation at the hands of elderly furnishings; is there a better method to lifting and placing the mirrors? Anything? Anyone? Help!
Thanks so much for reading this, and, as I said, I’m welcome to ANY advice whatsoever which might alleviate some of the stress of getting this monster back into position.
