Porcelain Doorknob Sets: Milk White and Jet Black Doorknobs for the Home

Antique porcelain doorknobs are a much sought after collectors item, especially during extensive home renovations, because of their classic design and significant use in many Victorian and early twentieth century American homes. When it comes time to replace the original doorknobs in your home due to breakage, malfunctioning knobs or normal wear and tear, it can be difficult to “let go” of those original antiques and find modern replacements. Fortunately, due to advances in technology and manufacturing, porcelain knobs are still produced today and can be retrofitted onto both old and new doors.

Now is may sound like a form of sacrilege to install reproduction knobs into an older home but this does not take away from the integrity of the original design, it restores it to its original beauty. Doorknobs are one of the most frequently used items in the home and therefore will need to be replaced from time to time. They are focal point on the door and cracked and damaged knobs will make the entire room look shabby and uncared for. Instead of seeking out replacement “original” knobs, start fresh with the same design and construction, only made now and not 100 years ago. This will maximize the life of your new doorknobs and increase the value of your home as well.

Doorknobs come in a variety of materials, with porcelain being one of the most popular because of the versatility of its design. Although most knobs produced in the early twentieth century were black, white and cream, there was a large selection of artisan painted knobs as well. These knobs could depict a variety of scenes ranging from simple floral patterns to ornate designs. In upper class homes it was not unusual for the porcelain knobs to come in unique shapes or with bevels around the edges.

The first doorknobs appeared in the United States in 1878 and since then the basic concept has not really changed. A standard doorknob has two knobs (one on either side of the door) that have been connected by spindle running through the door and when turned, the knobs operate a latch mechanism to allow the door to open and hold the door closed. The names of some of the parts have changed (example rosette plates were originally referred to as Escutcheon plates) but the purpose has remained the same.

Modern doorknobs sets are available in four basic configurations: single dummy, double dummy, passage and privacy style and five finishes. These doorknobs can be a variety of interior doors depending on the function required (operate a latch mechanism, lock, etc.) and coordinate well with existing hardware. Search for solid brass construction to ensure high quality materials that will be more resistant to damage and be sure to ask questions. If you are installing modern doorknobs on older doors it may be smart to consult with a contractor, designer or builder regarding any compatibility questions. Not all doorknob sets are the same size/design and it is important to take careful measurements before committing to a particular set.

Replacing older doorknobs is a wonderful way to restore the original beauty of an older home or add a wonderful new design element to modern and new construction. Remember that a doorknob is not limited to a particular “architectural style” and can be used in a variety of unexpected places such as in an apartment, office or even commercial building. Choose a finish that will coordinate with any existing hardware you do not plan to replace at this time and search for a common pattern to tie the look together further.

Best Deck Railing Designs For Your Home

Most people invest a lot of time and energy into finding the right deck railing designs for their home. Fortunately there is a wide selection of free deck railing designs available on the web for you to choose from.

The first step toward selecting the right design for your railing is deciding the right design for your porch. Here are some things to think about when deciding the best porch for your home:

1. Consider your lifestyle. A porch is a key element for many homes. Your lifestyle will determine how large a porch you need for example. If you spend on enjoying long afternoons entertaining friends and family outdoors, you may need a larger surface to work on than if you plan to seldom use your porch.

2. Decide the best place for your porch. For most this is the front of the home or south facing. However some prefer to watch the sunset on their porch so this will dictate location.

3. Select the right materials. Once you decide on the right porch you’ll need to select materials for both the porch and the railings. Most people opt for railings crafted or wood or metal, though you may consider other materials. You’ll want to look for designs that match the style of your home. Some railings and porches for example are better suited for contemporary style homes than Victorian style ones.

Popular Free Railing Designs

Most people save their money for equipment not for buying designs for their railings. The most popular porch designs often involve wood. Wooden porches and wooden railings often complement both contemporary and Victorian or other style homes. While wood does require some maintenance over time, so too do other materials like wrought iron. Some find the upkeep for wooden railings less tedious than the brushing required to keep iron railings rust free.

Your choice of materials may also depend on your environment. Some prefer metal railings because they live in low moisture areas and prefer something durable and weatherproof. Metal designs may also appeal to individuals looking for intricate or ornate fixtures to incorporate in their porch. Here are some additional considerations when selecting a design for your railing:

• Consider the cost and expense of deck railing designs. The more intricate the designs and more closely tied to the architectural style of your home the more expense you may incur.

• Consider tying rail design into lighting and otter home features.

• Be sure to match railing design to the overall porch floor plan of your home.

• Consider the ease of installation, the strength of the design and its functionality before buying

Raspberry Pink and Apple Green Are Great Home D?cor Colour Combinations

Finding your own unique interior design style can be tricky! Carry out some interesting researches before jumping in with your paint pot! Look at journals and magazine or online blogs for inspiration! You don’t have to replicate what you seen to the letter, simply pick the features you love and apply them or the colours which excite you within your own home!

Traditional style homes do not need to have an design style which is the same as the age of the house! Victorian homes can be brought into the 21st century by using bright and vibrant colours on either walls or in furniture, cushions and throws.

Beautiful raspberry pink may not be your immediate first colour choice, however when coordinated with crisp white, pale turquoise and apple green the look is quite simply stunning.

Place a large mirror over a fireplace to provide additional light and to make the room appear larger. Don’t be tempted to over clutter. Keep things simple and try not to stuff your living space full of bits and pieces, it will only end up looking messy, untidy and be a nightmare to keep dust free! Instead selection just one or two of your really special items and give them pride of place by making them a focal point.

Choose neutral tones or natural floor coverings for the floor. This will not only provide a light and airy appearance it will also help to make a room appear larger and will compliment your furniture and soft furnishings effortlessly.

A floor lamp is a great idea to brighten up a dull corner which does not get much natural light during the day and offers a snug corner during in the evening. Table lamps are also a good idea to add interest and ambient lighting to make your room feel cosy!

Add quirky, yet practical pieces to the room such as fabric coffee tables which will double up as additional seating. Chose a candy stripe of pins, white and green to bring cohesion and balance to your room.

Always add fresh flowers to a room to give a homely and very fashionable loo. Place large vases of seasonal flowers on the mantle piece in front of the mirror for a dramatic and glorious display. Spring and summer are ideal seasons for finding flowers and foliages which will compliment raspberry and apple green furniture and soft furnishings. During autumn and winter wonderful twigs and evergreen foliage can look simply stunning.

Never neglect window treatments. Hang white voiles from dark curtains poles for a chic and elegant style which will compliment your colour scheme beautifully. Sheer voiles will also enable as much natural light into the room as possible during the day and provide privacy during the evenings. Full length voiles or sheer curtains will be ideal to give height to a room. Leave them to hang straight or sweep them back from the centre and hold in place with beautiful beaded tie-backs to add a touch of glamour in an understated way.

A trend that is popular is using vintage lighting, in particular using chandeliers to light your special room or entry way. When we think of a chandelier we quite often associate these with the homes of mega rich Hollywood stars or elite blue blood mansions, but this is not the case today. You may be of the opinion that a chandelier is an ornate lighting fixture that has expensive crystal hanging on it. While this certain is true, there are however many chandeliers available that have a more contemporary look and can fit the budget of most home owners. The modern day rough hewn wood styles will make your rustic decorated home look spectacular.
For the more ornate and vintage look you will want to take a gander at the Tiffany style of chandeliers. These lighting fixtures always incorporate either clear crystal or colored glass pieces in the design and the can have an exception turn of the century look to them. How To Add Warmth To Your Home With Area Rugs

Area rugs can set off a room by adding comfort and warmth to the cold beauty of hardwood floors. By selecting one that suits your home and style you will enhance any room and make your home more inviting.

While many people like hardwood flooring in their home, the bare floor feel and sound reverberation can be off putting. A way to deal with these issues may be to add an area rug: it will instantly warm the room up and reduce echoes, at the same time as adding to the beauty of the space.

The key attraction of hardwood flooring resides in the fact that it is a natural material and its smooth surface does not allow the build up of dirt and allergens. People who suffer from allergies prefer it to wall-to-wall carpeting for this reason, and it is worth noting that carpets can sometimes be made with synthetic fibers rather than natural ones.

One could imagine that the same drawbacks would apply to area rugs. There are however many types of natural area rugs, available in various designs and colors to ensure that families concerned about the environment can find one to suit the style of their home.

Area rugs can set off the color scheme of any room while making it feel more comfortable. Their addition will also make your home look more inviting, giving off a homely, balanced feel to your interior.

While there is no denying the beauty of hardwood flooring, they are by nature rather hard to the touch and can also feel cold. Bare floors can also have a slightly austere look. Area carpets can add a soft touch to make the room welcoming and snug.

They also form part of your design scheme and allow you through careful planning and well thought-out purchase decisions to assert your style. Area rugs with formal, elaborate designs can add chic to a room. You can also select carpets for their pure, contemporary lines or add an oriental feel to your home with an Asian-inspired design.

You can find a vast range of timeless designs to add a classic accent to any traditional-style home, such as a country cottage or an old Victorian home.

Natural fibers and casual style area rugs, on the other hand, can add to the relaxed atmosphere of a casual-style home as they are both practical and eye-catching.

Selecting the right area rug for a room will not only take care of empty echoes, add warmth and coziness to your home: they form part of your design scheme and show off your home’s individuality. They will also reveal some of yours too if you take the time to select one that suits your personal style.
