Why You Should Favour the English Country Look in Your Home

No matter how many interior design fads and fashions have come and gone over the decades there is one enduring style that will never lose its hold. That style is called the ‘English country look’. It goes on and on, without much change and without flagging, mainly because this time-honoured style emphasises homeliness and our deep relationship with nature.

English country decor can be cottage casual, or slightly more grand and formal, but always with the focus on practical rather than flamboyant. Whether the country home is a tiny black and white cottage or a large manor house, English country style should exude warmth, comfort and a love for family life.

An English country home usually features plenty of period details, beamed ceilings, stone or wood floors, prominent fireplaces, family and equestrian portraits, old photographs, handmade throws and cushions, fresh flowers and lots of over-indulged pets. In a nutshell true English country style should not look planned or designed, but rather the result of generations living in a home.

If you want to add a more relaxed country look and mode of living to your home why not adopt the charm of English country decor? By introducing a blend of neutral colours, beautiful and appropriate fabrics, antiques, inviting sofas and appealing country accessories you can have the soft and inviting look of the English countryside no matter where your home is situated. By carefully selecting the right accessories, furniture and colour tones, you will be able to make your home look like it was designed by a professional designer.

Remember to always start with your colour schemes first, pulling ideas and inspiration from Mother Nature. Colour abounds in the countryside and you will see all manner of different pinks, reds, greens, yellows and blues in country gardens, along rustic lanes or high on the rolling hills. These colors can be vibrant or muted and therefore your country style can reflect these many variations, probably nowhere more obviously than in the fabrics you choose for furniture, cushions and window treatments. Chintz, floral patterns and damasks are common choices and often mixed with vintage fabrics or antique tapestries.

It’s also important to include the right lighting fixtures for your English country look; modern harsh lighting in the wrong place can easily destroy the exact feel you are trying to achieve. Try to avoid central ceiling lights where possible and aim for homely soft wall lighting and with strategically placed table lamps to add a degree of comfort and style. Bear in mind that lamps that have yellow or cream shades create a much more cosy effect and conical shades generally spread a softer and dimmer light.

Flooring is often informal and even imperfect. Worn stone and bare wood floors all help to create a casual country look. Newer wood can be stressed to look old and painted floors can be stenciled with vibrant rural designs. Equally attractive wall-to-wall carpet, with a good quality underlay, can also be perfect if you are seeking comforting luxury in your country retreat.

You can in fact pull a whole room together just by using coordinating accent rugs on top of hardwood or flagstone floors. Choose Oriental style rugs or rugs in creams and beiges for a more formal style and colourful rag rugs for a casual cottage look. Do be careful if you are planning to put down new tiles, wet tiles can be lethal so if they are going in a hallway or kitchen test them well for slipping before you buy.

Furniture should always be traditional, and even well-worn, giving an appearance of being inherited rather than bought reproduction. Fill your reception rooms with comfortable chairs and sofas that are not overstuffed with too many unnecessary cushions. Choose oak or mahogany for the dining room with needlepoint seats on the chairs for added interest and elegance. Display racks and cabinets can be utilized throughout to show off bone china and precious family heirlooms.

For a real country cottage look fill your home with oak benches, ladder-back chairs, rocking chairs, wicker furniture and Windsor chairs. Any piece of furniture can be given a rustic look by brushing it with a coat of paint then rubbing most of the paint off to reveal the natural wood underneath. A coat of matt Polyvine (varnish) will protect the finish. If you like the really aged look polish with a dark polish which will fall into the cracks and crevices then rub off excess to give a soft sheen.

English willow baskets of all sizes can be used to store wood, walking sticks, umbrellas, fruit, vegetables, outdoor boots and magazines. While brass lamps, wrought-iron candle holders, copper pans, old cheese dishes and even Victorian chamber pots will add a rustic country ambience to your country style home.

Rustic-style décor in the kitchen can include open shelves, hand- painted hutches, plate racks and cupboards to display plates, dishes and dinnerware collections. Storage can be an assortment of glass jars, stoneware pots, plain glazed earthenware and containers made from copper, or cast iron; while cookware tends to be functional and plain. Adding a free standing wooden butcher’s block can create a wonderful visual effect, as well being useful.

Most country kitchen units and furniture are built in natural woods or modern materials which are then decorated in various paint finishes, with architectural details picked out in a separate colours. Very often kitchen appliances such as dishwashers are cleverly hidden behind paneling or false cupboard doors.

The ideal country style bathroom normally has soft coloured walls in neutral tones with free-standing ‘Victorian’ baths or claw-foot tubs, pedestal sinks and old-fashioned country cabinets or antique cabinets. Plain white towels look better than those that are patterned or in bright colours. Use wicker or wire baskets to hold sponges, loofas and wooden brushes and put lots of different pretty soaps in large glass or porcelain dishes.

Finally enhance your country decor with coordinating artwork and accent pieces. Decorate with items that exude a country appeal to compliment your design. Purchase decorative accessories that work with your personality and preferences to make every room your own. Search for charming second-hand furniture, beautiful wooden boxes, crystal decanters, beautiful vases, hat racks, pine chests, ironstone china bowls, brass planters, battered straw hats, musical instruments, samplers, old master style paintings and framed needlework to complete your decor.

Five Ways To Achieve The Look of Victorian Christmas Decorations

1. Use lots of greenery. Natural greenery like boughs of pine and fir played a major role in Victorian holiday decor – in fact, holiday parties centered around “the hanging of the greens” were a standard of the day. Pine and fir are traditional holiday greenery, and branches of shiny, long lasting magnolia and laurel leaves look lovely on their own or in combinations.

2. Raid the pantry. Fresh fruit was considered a treat in the midst of a Victorian era winter, and it was enjoyed for its beauty as well as its taste. Tuck a few sprigs of green and some ribbon bows into a sparkling glass bowl of shiny red and green apples or clove studded oranges for a thrifty dash of period charm.

Walnuts, almonds, chestnuts and hazlenuts were also traditional Victorian Christmas treats that look great in bowls or among the greens in centerpieces and floral arrangements.

3. Raid the sewing basket. The Victorians loved embellishment and added it wherever possible. Try pinning or hot gluing lace or fabric store fringe around the center of inexpensive satin christmas tree balls for period flare. Simple bows of cheap by-the-yard lace make delicate and lovely additions to the tree, and broad lace, ribbon, or lengths of fabric can be twined among the greens in arrangements.

More sewing room ideas: ropes of cheap “pearls” or beads sold by the yard or precut on cards are a perfect Victorian accent almost anywhere. Drape them on the tree, twine them into wreaths and greens, or wrap them around white candles. Cut them into 4″ lengths and sew or glue several together at one end to create gorgeous tassels for on the tree or mantlepiece.

4. Use lots of candles. Though gas lighting was common during the Victorian period, candles were still used for elegant illumination. Groupings of long, slender tapers arranged among greens and flowers were typical of the day.

5. Think beyond the standard red and green. Deep jewel tones like burgundy red and forest green were popular during the Victorian era, and set off with accents of white, silver, or gold they add both elegance and period style. Plaids and paisley prints in tones of wine, deep greens, intense blues, and purple were also Victorian favorites.

Reproduction Furniture For That Classic Look

When my husband decided to start working from home, I wanted to surprise him with a new desk. Because we live in a pre-Victorian, Grade II listed building, it couldn’t just be any old desk. We’re not snobs, but we have always tried to furnish our house sympathetically, choose Regency or Victorian styles where possible. Because clients would come to the house, I thought a lovely antique desk would create exactly the right impression.

But what I didn’t bargain on was the price! I knew exactly what I wanted – I’d watched the antiques programmes on TV often enough. It’s often referred to as a partner’s desk, double pedestal with a tooled leather top. I wanted a darkish wood, possibly mahogany. And I found it too – in my local auction room. It went for over £5,000! Needless to say, I had to stop bidding long before then.

I was disappointed, but not daunted. We have several reproduction pieces in the house and most people can’t tell them from the real thing, so I decided to try that route. I found a website for Newby House Interiors that made quality reproduction antique furniture, and what’s more, they had the exact desk I was after.

I found a reproduction antique pedestal desk that would be perfect for my husband’s office. It came in a choice of mahogany or yew wood finishes and was very finely crafted. They had not attempted to give it a distressed look but it was polished to a high sheen for durability as well as smartness. The craftsmanship was evident throughout, from the dovetailed drawers to the attractive moulding to the sides and back. I chose the green leather writing surface which went so well with the mahogany, but I could have had burgundy, gold or brown. What I liked particularly about it was that whilst it looked exactly like a genuine antique desk, it was actually a modern computer desk with a cleverly concealed slide-out tray for the keyboard, though as my husband mostly uses a laptop, I’m not sure how he will use that.

Because the desk cost about eight times less than the one I had seen in the auction room, I argued that I could also afford a new chair and saw a very nice captain’s desk chair on the same site. It looked so comfortable that I wondered if my husband would ever be able to leave it.

I had seen the short video on the website which talked me through the high quality finish of the desk so I had absolutely no worries about what I was buying. I didn’t have to worry about getting it into the new office either because the pedestals were detachable for ease of movement. You could certainly see from the video the level of careful craftsmanship that went into the desk and I felt sure all the other reproduction furniture items would be of the same high quality.

I was very glad that I hadn’t found what I wanted at auction because that site was certainly a worthwhile find. I made a note of several other pieces I was interested in for other rooms in the house and will certainly be visiting it again. For quality and value, it couldn’t be beaten and you even get free delivery, which you don’t get at the local auction room. It’s a site I would definitely recommend if you are making a statement in your house with top quality reproduction furniture.

Sometimes, modern beds are not what you are interested in. Sometimes, it is the look of metal beds, such as those that are attributed to the Victorian era that will most inspire you. If so, the good news is you are not alone. More manufacturers have crafted these sexy and stylish pieces because of their popularity. When metal was first introduced to furniture, it was considered the highest quality. People who were wealthy were able to purchase finely made metal headboards and beds. Choosing a Victorian Look

- When buying contemporary bedroom furniture like this, keep color in mind. Although metal working was less refined during this time, purchasing colored metal was possible. Today, it is easy to find options for your master bedroom furniture in black, white or copper, not to mention other colors. Choose what fits in your space.

- You can use Victorian metal beds in your children’s room, too. In fact, as kids beds go, this style is particularly enjoyable because it offers that charming, easy going look to it. For a formal room, it works well. For children’s beds, go with a white color to the metal bed or add a canopy to the top.

As you consider the Victorian timeframe, remember that metal beds may not have been common for that period, but they were available. Further, today’s versions are stylish and far more safe. They also offer just as much charm and character as a true Victorian bed will add to your bedroom.

The beauty of living in countryside is found while using the Garden Furniture. Every items featured in the market are hanmade by the Amish people in their own shops present in their homes. These garden furniture which are made of maple, cherry, oak, teak woods, etc would surely make our garden and patio remarkable and wonderful.
